Sex Reversal Innovation in Nile Tilapia with Encapsulation Technology

Encapsulation technology, the controlled delivery of bioactive compounds through protective microencapsulation, is an innovative breakthrough in aquaculture. It has been successfully applied to the production of all-male Nile tilapia fry, enabling hormones and other active substances to be delivered more precisely and efficiently while minimizing the loss of active compounds into the aquatic environment and reducing environmental impact. Research has demonstrated that this technology can reduce the sex reversal period from 21–30 days to just 15 days. It also decreases hormone usage from 60 milligrams to approximately 16 milligrams, resulting in lower production costs, improved resource efficiency, and more effective farm management. In addition to sex reversal, encapsulation technology can be adapted to deliver vitamins, minerals, vaccines, bioactive extracts, and other beneficial nutrients to aquatic animals throughout every stage of their life cycle. This makes it a significant innovation that enhances aquaculture production by improving efficiency, strengthening biosafety, and promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices.
