Suwan 6480: Single-cross Hybrid Field Corn

Field corn is an important economic crop in Thailand. Although the field corn planting area accounts for 6 million rai per year and yields 5 million tons of grain yield, the amount does not meet the demand of the animal feed industry, which needs 8 million tons of produce per year. Therefore, Suwan 6840, the single-cross hybrid field corn, was developed to enhance productivity. The prominent traits of the field corn cultivar are its cylindrical ears and upright leaves. It also requires minimal plant spacing, which increases the number of ears per rai and yields. The cultivar not only has a high shelling percentage of around 85%, but it is also resistant to several diseases. Furthermore, the cultivar can be planted in both upland soil and paddy soil. It is planted during the dry season to substitute for off-season rice. In this research, breeding and field management were studied to elevate crop quality and sustainably promote the reliability of animal feed ingredients in Thailand.
