Kale, the Queen of Greens

Kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) is a member of the group of vegetables along with cabbage and broccoli. Kale is globally known as a ‘superfood’ due to the high levels of nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, and K, calcium, iron, and fiber. Furthermore, kale is rich in antioxidants, such as lutein and quercetin, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. Asst. Prof. Dr. Jutiporn Thussagunpanit from Kasetsart University has planted kale in a plant factory with artificial lighting (PFAL) and the hydroponic technique, specifically, the dynamic root floating technique (DRFT). The research focuses on the planting procedure that increases nutrient levels, improves produce quality, and enhances consumer safety.
