Azolla spp. and organic farming

Azolla spp. (mosquito fern, duckweed fern, fairy moss, water fern) is a small aquatic fern commonly found everywhere in marshes, still water bodies. It can propagate quickly. Azolla has the properties of green manure, biofertilizer and animal feed. Its leaves can get nitrogen directly from the air to make it grow fast. It has quite high nitrogen content. It decomposed easily and releases nutrients rapidly. Thus, dried Azolla is used to grow various vegetables. It is an alternative nitrogen source for organic farming.
